More than a Park, Less than A Continent: Finding the Real and Disneyfied Africa through Food and Dining Experiences was the culmination of my yearlong research and analysis while attending Chatham University's Food Studies program.
This research and subsequent paper utilized participant observation, cultural analysis, and reflective creative writing to explore Disney's Animal Kingdom Resort and Lodge's use of food to authenticate their version of Africa; additionally, an approach was taken to understand how Disney's cultural representation strategies encouraged or disputed harmful stereotypes of the African Diaspora. I completed a literature review, analyzed and applied theoretical concepts, and traveled to Disney World's Animal Kingdom Park to complete my participant observation as part of my methodology. Lastly, I identified research gaps and provided suggestions for ongoing equitable work within the African-themed park.
